What to expect

Durnstein, the famous medieval village of the Wachau Valley is the starting point of the Wachau for Adventurers Hike. The charming streets of Durnstein are lined with colorful buildings, wine taverns, and shops. The blue and white facade of the Baroque-style Stift Durnstein, also known as the blue church, adds a touch of uniqueness to the town. Visitors can explore the medieval streets, visit local wineries to taste the renowned Wachau wines, and enjoy the serene atmosphere along the Danube.

During our Durnstein Wachau for Adventurers hike, we will enjoy fantastic views over the rolling hills, the Danube, the castle ruins, and the village. Inhale the air, filled with aromatic scents of the holm oaks, pine trees, rocks, and wildflowers. This unique landscape has an almost Mediterranean touch and resembles the ones in Southern Europe.

After having reached the highest point of the hike, we continue with the ascent through a beautiful landscape with holm oaks and interesting rock formations, until we reach the castle ruins of Durnstein. Durnstein’s history is deeply intertwined with its medieval past.

The town gained historical significance when Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned in the castle during the 12th century. Legend has it that the English king’s loyal minstrel, Blondel, discovered him through a song. Today, the ruins of Durnstein Castle stand as a testament to this fascinating piece of history.

The Wachau region itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, celebrated for its cultural landscape shaped by the Danube River and the production of outstanding wines. So, hiking the Vogelbergsteig trail not only provides a physical adventure but also an immersive experience in a landscape rich in history, culture, and natural beauty. It’s a perfect blend of outdoor exploration and cultural discovery.

We will enjoy a well-deserved snack and local wine in one of the traditional wine taverns (optional, not included) before heading back to Vienna.
