What to expect
Embark on an unforgettable journey as we take you on a hike to Kahlenberg, starting from the picturesque wine village of Nussdorf. Our well-paved paths wind through vineyards, meadows, and the enchanting Vienna Woods, leading you to the breathtaking summit of Kahlenberg. At 484 meters (1588 feet) high, this vantage point offers a spectacular panorama of Vienna, the majestic Danube, and the rolling hills beyond. On clear days, catch a glimpse of the distant Schneeberg, the highest peak in Lower Austria, adding a touch of grandeur to your experience.
Heurigen culture is inseparable from Vienna. Viticulture in Vienna is practiced on an area of 622 hectares within the city limits, making Vienna the only European capital with a noteworthy wine production. About half of Vienna’s wine-growing region is located northwest of the city on the slopes of Kahlenberg and Nussberg.
Weather permitting, indulge in the rich traditions of Vienna by visiting one of the charming wine taverns nestled amidst the vineyards of Nussberg. Here, savor the nuances of Austria’s premier grape variety, Grüner Veltliner, alongside other cultivated treasures such as Riesling, Weißburgunder, and Chardonnay. Or try “Gemischte Satz,” where diverse white grape varieties are artfully blended and harvested together. Don’t miss the opportunity to taste the seasonal delight of “Sturm,” a precursor to wine, available in white, red, and the delightful pink Schilchersturm.
Vienna’s viticulture story is likely as ancient as the city, with evidence tracing back to the Roman Emperor Probus. Today, Vienna proudly boasts 640 winegrowers and 180 Heurige. Close to 2.5 million liters of wine are produced annually. The historic trails through the vineyards offer a captivating glimpse into Vienna’s viticultural legacy, a journey through time that began in the 12th century.
Join us for a hike through Vienna’s vineyards to Kahlenberg, a unique opportunity to view the city from a new perspective. Follow the footsteps of the Viennese and unwind with a glass of exquisite wine amidst the vineyards, where a deckchair invites you to relax and enjoy the scenery.
