Wachau Winter Walk

Wachau

What to expect

I created this hike especially for the winter months to enjoy the Wachau in the low season alike. Our walk begins in Krems and takes us on a big loop through the hills and vineyards overlooking the towns. On the horizon, we will spot the iconic Göttweig Abbey. On our way back, we will explore the old streets of Stein and Krems to the starting point.

Krems and Stein are two charming twin towns nestled along the banks of the Danube River. These towns offer a unique blend of history, architecture, and outdoor activities. Krems, the bigger of the two, features a well-preserved medieval charm and boasts cobblestone streets and vibrant squares. Stein, on the opposite bank, impresses with its Baroque architecture. The medieval and Baroque buildings, numerous churches, and hidden passages give these twin towns a magical and romantic appeal.

However, the true beauty lies in the vineyards surrounding these towns. We will follow the picturesque trails above Krems and Stein, enjoying the panoramic views of the Danube Valley. The Wachau Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to some of Austria’s finest vineyards, including the famous Grüner Veltliner.

Architectural gems dot the landscape, with ancient wine cellars, traditional Heuriger wine taverns, and charming hilltop castles offering a glimpse into the region’s rich history. Hiking through these vineyards is not just a visual treat but also an opportunity to discover the cultural and viticultural heritage of the area. This hike offers a perfect mix of architecture, culture, and nature. In December, we will have the chance to visit one of the local Christmas markets.

Difficulty

I consider this an easy hike. The trail is mostly paved. You should have an average fitness level and enjoy walking. Walking time is approx. 3 hours.
