Beautiful Schneeberg Valley Hike

Puchberg am Schneeberg Valley Hike farm houses

What to expect

The mountain range close to the border of Vienna is often referred to as the “Viennese Alps”, with Schneeberg Mountain being the highest peak in Lower Austria. As a spa and holiday resort, Puchberg has always attracted visitors – emperors, scientists, poets, musicians, and factory owners – thanks to its mountains, climate, and beautiful landscape. Throughout generations, many families have spent their summers here, built villas, and loved and promoted Puchberg. Today, Puchberg remains a vibrant, active, and largely natural place.

We begin our hike in the historic spa town of Puchberg. It is a popular tourist destination known for its beautiful scenery. Besides outdoor activities such as hiking, skiing, and mountain biking, the town also offers cultural attractions: the Maria Schnee Pilgrimage Church and the historic Schneeberg Railway that takes visitors up the mountain. As early as the 18th and 19th centuries, numerous visitors stayed in Puchberg and its surroundings to relax and cure their symptoms.

The trail runs in the valley basin at the foot of the Schneeberg mountain through a charming, rural landscape. Passing idyllic villages and organic farms with peaceful grazing cows in the orchard, we reach a wild rushing waterfall. The rocks are a popular climbing area. We take a short break before tackling the steep forest trail. Afterward, we relax during our lunch break.

We continue through forests, passing flower-filled meadows and quaint villages back to the starting point. Blossoming orchards, bright yellow dandelion meadows, and the snow-kissed mountain peak make this tour especially enjoyable in spring. But also autumn and its bright colors invite discovering this region. I recommend this tour to everyone wanting to explore the Austrian countryside near Vienna.
