A lazy day at Lunz am See

What to expect

Lunz am See is a small town located in the Mostviertel region of Lower Austria, Austria. The town is situated on the shores of the beautiful Lunzer See, a picturesque alpine lake that is a popular destination for swimming, boating, and fishing in the summer months. The lake is situated at an altitude of 850 meters above sea level, and it has a surface area of approximately 0.25 square kilometers. The water in the lake is crystal clear and has a deep green color, which adds to the beauty of the surrounding landscape.

There are several hiking trails around the lake, including the “Seerundweg” (lake circuit path), which takes visitors on a scenic walk around the entire lake. Along the way, hikers can enjoy stunning views of the mountains and the lake, and they can stop at several designated picnic areas to rest and take in the scenery.

In addition to hiking and outdoor activities, Lunzer See is also home to several restaurants and cafes, where visitors can enjoy traditional Austrian cuisine and relax with a cup of coffee or a cold beer. Overall, Lunzer See is a beautiful and tranquil destination that offers visitors a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life and immerse themselves in nature. In summer, the music festival wellenklaenge takes place on a little stage built right into the lake.

The area is surrounded by the Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park, which offers a wide range of outdoor activities including hiking, canyoning, and even skiing in the winter. More of the Ötscher-Tormäuer Nature Park can be explored in our Ötschergräben Grand Canyon of Austria tour.

Besides its natural attractions, Lunz am See has a rich cultural heritage. The town’s history dates back to the 12th century, and visitors can explore its historic buildings and churches. The town also hosts several cultural events throughout the year, including the annual Lunzer Wine Festival, which celebrates the local wine-making traditions.

I recommend this day trip to Lunz am See to everyone wanting to escape the city on a hot summer day and enjoy a lazy day at a natural mountain lake. Swim, rent a boat or SUP, take a walk around the lake, or simply do nothing at all.

Difficulty

I consider this day trip an easy activity. Walking time around the lake: approx. 1.5 hours. Length: 3.5 km. Swimming & boating are optional.
