We had a wonderful time hiking with Karin. The views were absolutely beautiful. There are not many landmarks along the trail, it is mostly just a very nice 2.5 hour walk. At the end we stopped at Durnstein castle which was neat to see. Karin is an excellent guide and knows a lot about the area. Would suggest this experience for nature lovers and for those looking for an off-the-beaten-path experience. 10/10 recommend!

The hike with Karin was amazing! You do feel as if you were going with an old friend. Karin knows perfectly the trails and the right spots to see the beautiful Viennese landscapes. I highly recommend it and will for sure try another trail with Karin when I return to Vienna!

Lovely trip. I would recommend it especially for summer or later spring. It was cold in March and not too much green but I expected that. Karin was very nice and we had great conversation. Overall a super nice experience but would recommend more for warmer times

The entire hike was well organised with exceptional views throughout the hike. Karin was also very easy to connect with which made the hike special - it was much like going on a hike with a friend. The last stretch of uphill hike was tiring but it was fairly short and Karin fits in breaks as needed so if you have a general level of fitness it will be ok. Overall, a nice change in scenery from the city, especially if you are here for a longer time.

She was very knowledgable about the area, and along the trail she would tell you about various plant species, fruits, and shared countless fantastic view spots. I would definitely do more hiking experiences with her when I’m in the area next time!

What to expect

On this Gems of Wachau hiking tour, we will discover the major beauties of the Wachau Valley – charming towns, old castles, and pretty landscapes. Starting in Stein and following ancient panoramic wine trails, we finally reach our destination, the medieval village of Durnstein.

The Wachau Valley is a picturesque region in Lower Austria, located along the Danube River between the cities of Krems and Melk. It is known for its stunning landscapes, rich cultural history, and world-renowned vineyards. The Wachau Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to several historic towns and villages, including Durnstein, Spitz, and Weissenkirchen.

Durnstein’s beauty and the gorgeous landscape surrounding it will delight you. From the castle ruins, we will enjoy another fantastic view of the village and the river Danube.

The Wachau Valley is also famous for its white wine production, particularly its Grüner Veltliner and Riesling varieties. In the end, we have the chance to visit a traditional wine tavern and try some local wine and food (optional) before heading back to Stein and further on to Vienna.

Difficulty

I consider this an easy hike. Most of the trail is paved. You should have an average fitness level and enjoy walking. Walking time is approx. 2,5-3 hours. Distance: 10 km/6 mi.

Meeting point

We meet in Wien Hütteldorf for carpooling (complimentary ride). Directions from the city center: take the U4 subway (green line) to the terminus Hütteldorf and follow the exit Keißlergasse. Take the escalator and wait either in or in front of the building (bus terminal). From Karlsplatz/city center, it is a 15-minute ride to Hütteldorf. Alternatively, you can meet me directly in Stein/Wachau.

What’s included

The price includes the guided hike by a certified guide. Enjoy personalized attention in a small group: we adapt to your speed and wishes. Complimentary ride from Hütteldorf or meeting directly in Stein/Wachau. Not included are transfers, food & drink, entry fees, and personal insurance including mountain rescue and equipment. The price for the bus ride from Durnstein back to the starting point in Stein is EUR 2,70.
